Reuben Martin

Recently I was commissioned to write a piece for the Great Book of Tottenham, a community-led initiative funded by the Bernie Grant Arts Centre to commemorate some of the district’s local figures. Tottenham was one of the places in London that bore the brunt of the recent riots – in many ways, the tributes and positive stories that came with the Great Book couldn’t have come at a better time.

My piece concentrated on the life of Reuben Martin; a finalist during the ’50s in the Mr. Universe competitions, founder of a local Tottenham gym and possibly latterly seen in a gorilla costume in many Carry On films, he led me on a merry research runaround and it was a great pleasure to find out more about the man. I hope I managed to rustle up a fitting profile for him.
