Kakania Launch

21/06/2015

On June 25th Kakania: an anthology will have its official launch at London’s Hardy Tree gallery. This will be part of the ‘Mahu’ exhibition, dedicated to S.J.Fowler’s ongoing asemic writing experiment. The anthology comprises a number of printed responses to the Kakania project for which over forty contemporary European artists and poets were commissioned to create new work that related to figures from Habsburg-era Vienna. The book is produced by Polimekanos for the Austrian Cultural Forum‘s annual Occasions series.

I’m proud to have a piece concentrating on painter Broncia Koller-Pinell included, and at Thursday’s launch I will be reading alongside writers and performers Aki Schilz, David Kelly-Mancaux, Emily Berry, Jeff Hilson, Michael Zand, Pascal O’Loughlin, Rhys Trimble, Vicky Sparrow, Alison Gibb and Andrew Spragg.

I was recently granted a spot on For Every Year‘s roster, the ongoing online project conducted by Crispin Best that looks to commission ‘a story or poem for every year since 1400. Or something else’. At time of writing, the site includes work by Emily Berry, Harry Burke, Sam Riviere and many-uninked-lifetimes-of-others all collated here.

My piece
is dedicated to 1785 and the birth year of Jacob Grimm, one half of Die Brüder Grimm / Die Gebrüder Grimm and their famous Fairy Tales: linguist, folklorist, lexicographer and suprapositivist Romantic conceiver of legal policy (as we all are, in our own way). Many thanks to For Every Year, and to Louisa and the team behind the Pentales’ Hemingway Residency whose generous time and space in 2013 allowed some research that went into the final poem.
